Alcazaba, moorish fortress at Almeria, Spain

Almeria is well known for being a film location for countless spaghetti western movies and commercial spots. It even inspired John Lennon in 1966 for writing his Strawberry Fields Forever song. But today we will be talking about The Alcazaba in Almeria as one of your must see places. It was built in the tenth century, and for a thousand years, has been crowning the city, preserving the whole beauty of a Moorish citadel.

It can be seen from any part of the city and it is the biggest of the citadels built by the Arabs in Spain. It has three walled enclosures, although one of them was built by the Catholic Monarchs. The first enclosure has a large garden and ponds constructed during the Muslim period. The second area belongs to the vast palatial residence of King Almotacín. And the third enclosure is a Christian castle within the Muslim fortification, built in times of the Catholic Monarchs.

The views from the top will leave you breathless, overlooking the whole city and the Mediterranean Sea. No wonder that the citadel has been chosen from the makers of Games of Thrones as setting for its season 6.
